This is incorrect. Horary is the very heart of astrology. It contains the foundation principles for all other forms of astrology. It has an internal congruency and integrity that sets it apart from modern forms. It retains an essential purity in its reliance upon first principles which are as valid today as they were in ancient times. The study of horary astrology offers the modern astrologer clarity and discernment about which features to focus upon. It provides a method of extracting important and relevant meaning from the horoscope. Horary astrology offers the modern astrologer deep meaning and extraordinary insight into the web of links between planets in the horoscope. The perception that horary is only about finding lost objects is misinformed and overlooks its profound depth and subtlety. Since I took up the study of horary astrology the way I look at a horoscope has been transformed. I recommend the study to beginning and experienced astrologers who have a sincere desire to comprehend the meaning provided by the cosmos.
Now happiness is can be a very transient state at the best of times, because even when one desire is sated there emerges another desire which screams for satisfaction. Perhaps, as the Buddhists suggest, we can only ever be truly happy when we stop wanting and desiring.
While there are various astrological indicators that suggest whether a person may be happy or content, one of the strongest indicators in horary astrology is dignity.
At a basic level, to establish whether the client will be happy with a change that is proposed for the future, we consider the condition of their significator at the time the question was asked, and compare this to its condition as it moves through the zodiac in the short term future.
In this example let us say that Jane’s significator is Mercury in the last degrees of Aquarius and it is about to ingress into Pisces. In the sign of Aquarius Mercury is not in any of the major dignities. Here at this basic level we are only considering the major dignities: dignity, exaltation, detriment and fall. When a planet has no dignity it indicates that the person it represents is not particularly happy.
However when Mercury moves into Pisces it is in its detriment and fall, showing that Jane will be most unhappy and will probably seriously regret breaking up with Tarzan.
Let’s look at a different example: Jane’s significator is Mars in Libra about to ingress into Scorpio. In the sign of Libra Mars is in its detriment indicating that Jane is not happy. In the zodiac sign of Scorpio Mars is in its dignity indicating that Jane will be very glad that she broke up with Tarzan.
While this method of using the major dignities to describe happiness is simplistic, it is an excellent way to show the value of the major dignities and how they can be used to evaluate situations in the horary chart.
In reality the horary astrologer would also consider the other dignities, such as triplicity, term, and face, and also consider the various accidental dignities, fixed stars, antiscia and planetary aspects for a full evaluation.
In the Horary Astrology Diploma online correspondence course I go through each of these factors, step-by-step, building on each in a cumulative manner, so that answers to questions posed by clients can be answered clearly and accurately.
Instead a chart for the time when the question is asked is used.
There is a strong cosmic resonance with the serious intent of the person asking the question and the chart for the time when it is asked, and this resonance is shown in the horary chart as the past and the future in relation to the matter asked about.
Modern natal astrology has a number of serious disadvantages compared to horary astrology. The most obvious is that few birth times are accurate. So many people give their birth time as being 6 pm or on the hour, which seems to defy the laws of probability. Many astrologers spend hours trying to rectify charts but there can never be any certainty that these charts are accurate.
In contrast the horary chart is accurately timed for when the astrologer receives the question.
Neither does the horary chart require us to wade through the details of solar return charts, progressed charts, or harmonic charts. All that is needed is contained within the one chart.
Perhaps the major advantage of the horary astrology is that the chart has only a singular focus: the question asked. In comparison the astrological symbolism contained in the natal chart can be interpreted on many different levels for different time periods.
Most clients come with one or two major concerns and seek a practical and accurate answers to their questions. Horary astrology provides accurate and clear answers to common questions. The questions can include relationships, money, work, health, etc..
Modern astrologers have the opportunity to dramatically increase their effectiveness and value to clients by using horary astrology. Horary offers a huge time saving as well as increased accuracy.
The other interesting point is that horary has retained the ancient predictive techniques that were discarded by Alan Leo at the beginning of the last century. These techniques were ditched so that he could avoid being seen as a predictive astrologer (he was being prosecuted for making public predictions and wanted to stay out of jail). It is ironic that many of these techniques we known to W.D. Gann and would be so useful for predicting the stock markets using financial astrology.
Horary astrology has retained the ancient predictive techniques and in the Horary Astrology Diploma Course I explain clearly how these techniques are used. This is an online correspondence course (distance education).

Some astrologers pay extraordinary attention to what are called ‘considerations before judgement’ and will declare some horoscopes as invalid and therefore incapable of being interpreted.

I believe that this practice overlooks the basic truth that the cosmos never ‘goes to sleep’. The basic principles of astrological interpretation do not suddenly switch off because someone has asked a silly question. It is much more likely that the horoscope will reveal ‘the question behind the question’ and identify the deeper underlying and unstated issues.

The ‘considerations before judgement’ can always be used as a convenient tool to avoid interpreting a chart, but the bigger picture is that the horoscope will reveal the deeper truth to those astrologers who have the determination to apply sound astrological principles and the discretion to communicate appropriately to the client, always ensuring that the client’s best interests are kept as a top priority.

The so called “Considerations before judgement” are rules or prohibitions that preclude judgement. However experience shows that few of these considerations prevent judgement. They can sometimes provide clues about the chart and the circumstances surrounding the question.

To understand the genesis of these considerations one has to go back into history to a time when astrologers worked for kings, queens, princes and the aristocracy. Some lucky astrologers found a patron who would offer a good retainer and lodgings in return for advice on all manner of things.

However not all patrons or employers were blessed with a good nature. History has many examples of astrologers whose heads were separated from their bodies on account of the displeasure of their employers. Astrologers were often asked questions that put them in very awkward situations.

For example the lustful prince asks his astrologer, who is very comfortably ensconced within the castle walls: Will I have my way with the village lass from the neighbouring village? The astrologer looks at the horary chart, and concludes that this lass from the village has what we would politely call ‘a transmissible disease’. Now the prince has only one thing on his mind and will be very angry if he gets a “No” answer. But imagine his fury if he catches ‘the pox’!

What is the poor astrologer to do? Aha! There must be something in the chart that says that the chart ‘is not radical’, that it cannot be judged, that the heavens are not in accord with the question that has been asked. And so were invented many rules to protect the astrologer. He (and it was almost always a male) was always able to claim that “No sorry Your Highness, the chart is not radical and cannot be judged”. If the horoscope appeared favourable he could provide a full answer. However because the ruling class was often educated in astrology the astrologer had to be able to justify any refusal to provide an answer.

There are however within the list of considerations some examples which do offer further information relative to the question. For example if the Ascendant of the horoscope shows late degrees then perhaps the matter has already proceeded beyond the ‘point of no return’. If the Moon is in the seventh house in a relationship question then perhaps the spouse has total control in the matter asked about, and there is little to be done.

The bigger picture is that astrology ‘never goes to sleep’. The principles which describe the underlying principles of our existence are not suddenly suspended because someone has asked a question too late in the day, or because Saturn happened to be passing through the tenth house.

The horary chart will always provide insight into the situation that has been asked about, it will not be devoid of meaning and it will not be incapable of being read. As long as the basic time tested principles of astrological interpretation are applied, meaning can be extracted from the chart. There can be no exceptions.

Some of the considerations refer to the astrologer. For example when …

” The Lord of the 7th unfortunate, or in his fall, or Terms of the Infortunes, the Artist shall scarce give a solid judgment”.

However since, presumably, the question is not about the astrologer, why introduce the astrologer into the question? If the querent has no intention of asking about the astrologer, then the astrologer has no place in the interpretation. To introduce people unnecessarily into the interpretation where they have no legitimate place only fogs the mind and expands the ego of the astrologer.
